This is a website for weevil taxonomists and others interested in the beetle superfamily Curculionoidea, with the aim of facilitating cooperation and information-sharing worldwide. It will enable weevil specialists to share information online and together develop a community resource with data on weevil hosts, morphology, systematics, taxonomic characters, literature and other areas of mutual interest. The amount of information available now vastly outstrips our ability to keep track of it. For several years weevil taxonomists have realised they need a web resource where they can discuss issues and share information, for example on taxonomic character states, to minimise confusion in the literature and enable acceleration of research. This site grew from that need.
While anyone can access the content of the site (other than private work areas set up by small teams) only those with an account can contribute to the site or edit content. If you wish to become a contributor please click on the 'Log In' button on the top right of the screen, and then select 'Create new account'. When you complete the on-line form please include your interests and affiliation.
The site is dedicated in the first place to weevil systematics and taxonomy, but is by its nature responsive to the way in which we, the users, chose to develop it.
The site is maintained by Chris Lyal on behalf of contributors, who retain copyright.

The Barcoding Facility for Organisms and Tissues of Policy Concern (BopCo) aims at developing an expertise forum to facilitate the identification of biological samples of policy concern. Such identifications can rely on traditional morphology-based approaches requiring taxonomic expertise and/or DNA-based techniques demanding specific skills and access to a fully equipped molecular laboratory.

The intent of BopCo therefore is (1) to act as a focal point for identifying biological materials upon request, using both morphological and DNA-based techniques, (2) to produce well-documented DNA barcodes of relevant taxa, (3) to maintain reference collections of barcoded organisms and the corresponding DNA barcode databases, and (4) to explore and implement new tools and techniques for species identification and DNA barcoding.

We invite you to join us on this website to assemble and organize all available data on horseshoe crab distribution, demography, and other ecological important features that may help to improve the conservation and management of these wonderful creatures.
We are planning to use the assembled biological information to (i) generate an update of the global horseshoe crab distribution, and (ii) to build local/regional species distribution models for the protection and management of horseshoe crab stocks.
Please contact us, if you want to become a contributor or a regional coordinator. In both cases your responsibility would be to collect biological information on horseshoe crabs from your region. Under 'submit records' we provide data templates and instructions for collecting the neccessary data and for setting up your own citizen science program.
The data assembled by our network will be made accessible and free to use for all contributing members, under the condition that the original data sources are informed in advance and cited appropriately.
